Application Ops Ladder

I was at the Web Summit in November and saw Bryan Liles talk about the "Application Ops Ladder". It was a great talk that really got me thinking about devops in cloud hosting.

I love the concept of treating servers like livestock rather than pets.

Bryan works at Digital Ocean and calls himself an "Urban Programmer" (watch the video for explanations...). He has seen a lot of companies treat servers like pets. Pets you have to feed and care for, nurture back to health if they get sick and so on.

He says to treat serves like livestock. It's important that you are able to keep them healthy as a group but not individually. If it gets sick or has an issue, kill it and spin up a new one. It's important that you figure out why it was sick but in the meantime your clients are still up and working.
